Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

What next for these two sides?

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
